San Francisco Giants Opening Day

The San Francisco Giants opening day performance was looking smooth until the eighth inning.  For the first seven innings Madison Bumgarner was dealing in the desert.  In those seven innings he gave up six hits and one walk while hitting two batters with a pitch also.  The only real blemish on his line came on a triple by Mark Trumbo in the third that tied the game up 1-1 at the time.  Bruce Bochy decided he didn't want to extend Mr. Bumgarner too far, so he put Javier Lopez to begin the eighth.  By the time the eighth was over, the Giants had used four pitchers and given up three runs, closing the gap to 5-4.  But Sergio Romo and Jeremy Affeldt did enough to get it to the ninth.  At that point Santiago Casilla came in and shut the door in the ninth to lock down the win in the first real game of 2015 for the defending champions.

Offensively, the Giants got it done at the top of the order with 8 hit from the 1-2-3 hitters.  Nori Aoki looked good in what may become his temporary role as lead off man until Hunter Pence can get back on the field for the Giants.  Angel Pagan moved from the top of the lineup to take over the 3 hole left vacant until Pence can get out there.  Casey McGehee and Brandon Crawford both banged out 2 hits as well, and the Giants tallied 13 hits overall in putting up their 5 runs.

Giants Opening Day is over.
What does game 2 hold for us?

One thing it will definitely not hold in store for us is the first start by Matt Cain since the middle of the year in 2014.  Luckily, so far it looks like a strain of a tendon rather than ligament damage that is going to put Cain on the shelf for a couple of weeks.  It has also been announced that Jake Peavy is most likely going to be scratched from his start on Wednesday.  What all that means is that Ryan Vogelsong will get the start tomorrow for the Giants.  For Wednesday the Giants could push up Tim Lincecum to take the start, but Chris Heston has also been mentioned as a possibility.

Fans that attend a Giants Opening day will often want to take home a souvenir to mark the day.  If you forgot to get your goodies I would go to eBay.  They have everything!
