Oakland A's April 9 baseball

Kendall Graveman probably woke up before his April 9 baseball start with some major butterflies.  He was scheduled to make his first Major League start for the Oakland Athletics.  That alone is enough to give anybody a case of the jitters.  But he was coming in with perhaps a little extra pressure being heaped onto his shoulders by himself.  The source of that pressure being the fact that during 2015's Spring training Graveman managed to put up the lowest ERA in all of baseball.  Which made his performance doubly tough to swallow.

By the time he got his first out of the game, the rangers had already put up 3 runs.  By the time he made it to the showers he had given up 8 runs, 7 of them earned in only 3 1/3 innings of work.  18.90 is a far cry from 0.36 when it comes to ERA, but it gives him a little more realistic view of what he is going to have to build up to in order to keep the starting spot that his fine performance during the Spring earned him.  If you are going to have a bad start today might have been the right day for it to happen.  I say this because the A's never came up with any offense to support his effort anyway, so a great performance might have been wasted.  But it would have been nice for the kid to have that as a problem instead of an 18.90 ERA and an 0-1 record to show for his day of April 9 baseball.

In the eight inning the A's did finally push across 1 across the plate when Marcus Semien stroked a double to left that was bobbled by Ryan Rua.  It should have been no RBI and an error because of it, but as I write this it has been ruled no error.  Eric Sogard scored on the play, but he was clearly being held until the ball got bobbled so it would not surprise me to see a scoring change sometime during the evening.  None of that mattered in the final outcome though as the Rangers wrapped it up by the final score of 10-1 to split the 4 game set with the A's

Tomorrow the A's will be hosting the Seattle Mariners with Drew Pomeranz scheduled to take the hill for the A's.  The Mariners will counter with the young right-hander Taijuan Walker.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM.  If you can't be there you can always check back here tomorrow.

  Giants April 9 Baseball

The April 9 baseball game between the Giants and the Padres was a fantastic version of the classic pitching duel.  Tim Hudson took the mound for the Giants to start the game.  He gave his all for 6 1/3, not exactly dominating, since he did give up 5 hits and 5 walks for the kind of WHIP Hudson would never be satisfied with.  But he was classic Huddie when he needed to be, inducing 4 double plays that allowed him to keep putting zeroes on the board.  Hudson's performance was top notch clearly, but paled in comparison to the work of the bullpen.  6 different relievers combined to pitch the final 5 2/3 giving up only 2 hits in that time.

On offense it was tough to find highlights.  The only man in the game with 2 hits was Gregor Blanco.  Neither hit mattered in the end but could be a reason why the Padres chose to intentionally walk Blanco in the 12th right before Justin Maxwell was tabbed by Bruce Bochy to pinch hit.  Maxwell battled once he got in the box.  he fouled off three pitches on a pretty steady diet of sliders from Nick Vincent.  Maxwell worked the count full and on the seventh pitch of the at-bat he stroked a clean single up the middle to drive in Brandon Crawford with the run that would prove to be the game winner.  The Giants and the Padres will sleep it off and come back and do it again tomorrow.  Check back here to get the full story.
